The Second Weekend of the Midlands Age Group Championships saw the Lincoln Vulcans once again produce some concrete performances with the clubs younger swimmers bringing home a further eight medals and 19, 4th – 8th placings. Taking the clubs total 2009 Midlands Age Group Championship finalist tally to 32 and medal haul to 18.
11 year old, North Kesteven School pupil Olivia Kelsey collected a total of three medals, taking third place in the girls 11 years 200m individual medley and second spots in both the girls 11 years 400m freestyle and 100m fly events.
Oliver Bitowt, continuing in the form of the previous weekends performances, collected further 5 podium places. Taking the top spot in the boys 13 years; 200m fly, 100m backstroke and 400m Individual medley events and silver in the boys 13 years 200m freestyle and 100m breaststroke events.
This takes the swimmers individual total Midland’s 2009 tally to an impressive 12 medals, eight of which are gold and four, silver.
New national times were also achieved but only by those swimmers who had previously qualified, so at the end of July 16 Vulcans swimmers will head to Sheffield’s Ponds Forge to compete at the National Youth or National Age Group Championships.
Fred Furniss, the clubs head coach is pleased with the clubs performance but also sees this year’s achievements as a benchmark to exceed for the future.
‘Over both weekends solid performances have been put in across the club and although we have done very well this year, when in comparison to teams like Nova Centurion, the Midland competitions show us what has got to be done, both in and out of the pool. The Swimmers and coaches now have very definite targets to work towards over the next 12 months based on our achievements to date. Targets which amount to increasing both the number of Swimmers who qualify for both the regionals and then subsequently the national’s as well and securing more top eight placings at both of these events.’
