Emma Smithurst from Derventio eXcel has just returned home after her success in the last week competing in the final two rounds of the swimming World Cup. During the competition, which was littered with stars fresh from Olympic success, Emma swam three finals at the Stockholm leg and three finals at the final leg in Berlin.
In Stockholm, her biggest success was in her number one event the 400 IM, where she claimed not only the silver medal and the prize money, but also a senior English record in a time of 4.35.22. After a day of travelling directly from Stockholm to Berlin, Emma then repeated this feat by once again swimming in three finals where she picked up another silver medal in the 400IM, this time lowering her own new English record by over a second to 4.34.11 and also gaining a current Senior World Ranking of 4th.
Her impressive results have been the culmination of a great year for Emma after winning the Olympic B Tri Nations meet in the summer. She now looks forward to a gruelling winter of hard work in readiness for next spring’s challenges. Her coach Mark Rose, who was with the British team during the World Cup, is naturally delighted with Emma’s results. “Emma is now starting to reap the rewards of hard conscientious work, all done at a consistently high level year in year out.”
Congratulations to Emma.
